Search for Dark Matter — Part One
Govert Schilling, author of The Elephant in the Universe: Our Hundred-Year Search for Dark Matter, traces a century of astronomers’ evidence for unseen mass in the cosmos, beginning with Jacobus Kapteyn and Jan Oort studying galactic motions. Fritz Zwicky, Jerry Ostriker, Vera Rubin, and Kent Ford demonstrated that dark matter halos are necessary to stabilize rapidly spinning galaxies and form the observed cosmic structures throughout the universe.
