Ancient Greek Power Rivalries
Classical scholar Adrian Goldsworthy, author of Athens and Sparta: The Rivalry That Shaped Ancient Greece, analyzes the geopolitical rivalry between Athens and Sparta, examining the Delian League, Kimon’s leadership, and Pericles’ strategic refusal of land battles. He explains the Thucydides Trap concept, the devastating plague of Athens, the disastrous Athenian expedition against Syracuse, and Lysander’s eventual Spartan victory over Athenian naval forces. (6)
