Show notes
In this episode, Dianne Na Penn, who leads product for Anthropic's research and labs teams, joins me for the fifth conversation in the "Inside PM" series. Dianne joined Anthropic in 2023 as its first technical product manager, and her team has since run product on every model from Claude 2 through the Claude 5.5 family and helped incubate Claude Code, MCP, Skills, and Claude Design. We get into who makes it as a PM at Anthropic and who doesn't, why early-career PMs and former forward-deployed engineers have an edge, and how her team keeps up the pace without burning out.
–
Key topics:
• Why the first two months should feel like "some of the hardest of your career"
• What trips up PMs from big, hierarchical companies, and how to question assumptions "in a graceful manner"
• Why early-career PMs are "extremely effective and high ceiling"
• Forward-deployed engineers who moved into product, and why they've been exceptional PMs
• Dogfooding prototypes instead of writing PRDs in the corner
• Running on monthly plans against assumptions three to six months out
• Claude Code wasn't a one-day leap: from autocomplete to agentic loops in the terminal
• When the next model will fix it: "an incredibly dissatisfying answer as a PM"
• The bootcamp on building products that "ride the exponential"
• Working sustainably with PM pods, copilots, and team days off
